Mr Banya was weeding around our little flower bed last weekend, when he spotted… a four leaf clover! A teeny tiny one. Which begs the question, “If a man who cannot count finds a four leaf clover, is he lucky?” (Love this quote from Stanislaw Jerzy Lec. And I guess I should point out that yes, Mr Banya can actually count, to at ten at least.)
So of course, I dashed inside to grab my camera. What a great opportunity to practise my new macro photography skills!
And then, I heard Mr Banya announce “I found another one! A bigger one!”
Wow, what are the odds of that? Two four leaf clovers growing in our tiny little garden bed, at the same time???
And then, I kid you not, he found….
A five leaf clover.
Yup, I’m not even kidding. That’s rare enough to make the dodgy British newspapers, that is. Sure the fifth leaf on the five leaf clover might be a bit small and wonky. But count ’em.
And so, at this point, I’ll admit that I started to become slightly sceptical. I mean, who has even heard of a five leaf clover?
Well, apparently the Irish have. They say that those who find a five leaf clover will be even luckier and have more financial success than those who find just a four-leaf clover. So five leaf clovers do exist. Apparently, someone once even found a 56 leaf clover. Wow, that’s a truck load of luck.
Anyway, according to this dodgy blog, the odds of finding just a four leaf clover are 10,000 to 1. And the odds of finding a five leaf clover are 1,000,000 to 1. So what are the odds of finding a four leaf clover, and then another four leaf clover, and then a five leaf clover? Well, I work it out to be precisely 100,000,000,000,000 to 1. That’s one hundred trillion.
Now I know that technically Mr Banya might not have been looking for the first time and that there are environmental factors to consider, yada yada yada.
I still reckon he’s super lucky. He has me after all. 🙂
(And yes, we may have spent the rest of the afternoon looking for more. Just think of all the productive things we could have been doing instead. As the saying goes, “Many an opportunity is lost because a man is out looking for a four-leaf clover.”)
