So I lost my keys the other day.
Actually, correct that. I had my keys lost for me. By whom? My best guess is this cheeky monkey. So I turned to the fountain of knowledge that is Facebook, and asked:
“Help me out here folks. If you were a cheeky toddler, where would you have hidden my keys? :-S”
And the suggestions flooded in! So many great ideas – you guys certainly know how to think like a toddler. And so I madly dashed around the house checking if they were:
- in the garbage bin
- in the recycling bins
- in a random boot (which, incidentally, is where I found our TV remote control)
- next to the biscuits
- at the back of the pantry
- in the fridge
- in the freezer
- in a dress up purse
- in a dress up handbag
- with the stuffed animals
- in the toy box
- in the toy car
- in the washing machine
- in the dryer
- in the toilet
- in her nappy (eww!)
- in between the couch cushions
- inside one of cushions
- in the small spaces behind and under the furniture
- under a blanket
- under a pillow
- in the garden
- in the dogs bed
- in a heat vent
- on the bookshelf
and still haven’t found them…. Sigh.
If she wasn’t so cute, I may just have to strangle her.

I’ll let you know if I do ever find my keys, and in the meantime I guess I’ll be ordering another one of those $500 fandangled car key thingies. Unless you have any other ideas for me?

Earlier this year my toddler hid my keys and it took me 6 days to find them!!
He hid them in a roll of transfer tape (for vinyl crafting) that was under my craft table. I only found them after knocking it over and hearing the keys shift.
Hopefully it doesn’t take you 6 days and you have some spare keys.
Oh goodness, you'd never think to look in there would you! I've got spare keys that will suffice for a short while, hopefully they'll turn up. #mustlookundercrafttable
While visiting a friend's house, their son hid my keys in the clothes dryer. We had to search for them for awhile to find them.

A few years ago, my kids' Great Grandmother (who is 97 now, but was about 95 then), hid our keys in the middle of her paper napkins / serviettes. Luckily my husband saw her out of the corner of his eye, or they may have taken us a while to find too. 🙂
Jammed into a screw hole or wedged into a snug area under a kitchen table. You would never find it and most keep their tables for years and don’t clean underneath.
Did you check the laundry basket? My toddler likes to put all kinds of stuff into the laundry basket, including: clean clothes, toy blocks, her baby doll, Daddy's belt, etc.
Oh good one, will do! I might just see the quasi-mythical 'bottom of the laundry basket' for the first time in years. 🙂
Valerie!!! Thank you for asking about the laundry basket. My 11mo old hid them there and I wouldn’t have thought to look there!!! Thank you
My daughter used to hide things in our subwoofer. There’s a big round opening in the front and if they push things far enough to the back, it will fall in. My husband has had to take the back off several times to fish out random objects. Other places have been in end table drawers and night stand drawers. They also have hidden things (like sippy cups full of milk) in the fridge of their play kitchen. That’s fun to find a week later…
Good luck finding your keys!
Oh good spots, I'll check! My daughters posted pencils in the centre post of a swivel chair once. One of these days I'll screw off the bottom and retrieve them. 🙂
My son hid the keys it in the laundry basket, under the sofa and once in a gigantic bag full of lego bricks! The remote control of our TV was found in oven, after some time of melting (but it still works! :D)… Have a nice day and good luck for your search, Karin

Haha! At least you have a good story to tell when people ask why the remote is half melted 🙂
Check all your drawers and cupboards.. My youngest was forever "storing" things in ours!! Her blankie took us forever to find a bedtime some days!!
Why don't you play hide-another-item with her? Hope she remembers and hides it in the same spot?! Lol!

Good luck. They could be anywhere!

What about… somewhere outside? Or in the car itself? Or probably the secret hiding place she has for her treasures that you will never know about 😉

This post made me laugh because we just went through something similar — with a 5 and 7 year old! My husband swore they hid his truck key. We looked EVERYWHERE!
Did you ever find your key?

Oh no! Alas I never found them, and I've had a new set cut. (Car keys are so expensive these days!) I am still vaguely hopeful that they'll turn up one day – even if it's just to satisfy my curiosity about where they went! 🙂
im in the same situation right now, my little sister has lost the car keys around the house somewhere, she keeps pointing at things, but they arent there. try looking behind the tv, or behind furniture, they like to sneak stuff away, and then forget where they put it.
Oh no! Good luck with your search!
Might be in a dryer or some store room. Where did you found the keys?
In the barbeque… it was lit at the moment he threw it in.
Oh good one! I see you and my toddler think alike! We don’t have an open BBQ at our place, but if we did, then I’d be looking through the ashes right about now. 🙂
Invest in Tile! I did after missing keys (I’m a full time nanny) and it has helped me with finding my keys and even my phone. So simple and not overpriced to me (compared to my $500 keys)
Yes, I totally need this! It’s a pity they can’t find keys retrospectively. 🙂
Did they ever get found?
I took off my engagement ring to wash dishes and my toddler took off with it. He’s not even two yet.
I’ve. Looked. Everywhere.
Alas no, my keys never turned up! I’m so sorry to hear about your engagement ring 🙁
I’m unfortunately in the EXACT same situation. It’s been 6 months
Did you ever find your keys? My niece lost my debit card. I knew it was her when I found my deodorant behind the tv 😖😖😖
Oh no, hope you found it! Alas no, my keys are gone for good… 🙁
Did you ever find your keys?
My toddler broke a piece off of those really hard plastic tumblers and I haven’t a clue where it’s at
Alas, no! I can only guess they must have ended up in the bin, or in the garden, or.. I don’t know! Best of luck with your search…
Going through the same thing its been a week, she is 2 and I have searched everywhere, room by room! Everywhere you listed above I have searched. It’s a mystery. I will have to pay out 300euro for a new set. 🙁
We are going through this right now, we have been searching for three hours, the kids think it’s a great game. The most annoying thing, I’m Grandma and my keys are locked in my daughters car because we went out today, and it’s her keys that are lost. Yes I’m now staying the night so we can keep searching tomorrow. Arrggghhhhhhhh
