Simple balloon decorating process art idea for toddlers and preschoolers.
Sometimes the simplest activities are the best!
My daughter Bee was a 2.5 year old toddler when we did this, and she had a blast decorating her balloons, and then hanging them up in our backyard to dry. Although, even when they’d dried she didn’t want to take them down, so they doubled as colourful backyard decorations for while there!
We used:
- balloons
- small pieces of coloured tissue paper
- feathers
- glue
This idea was inspired by a static electricity experiment with the tissue paper and the balloons that we’d done the day before. By rubbing the balloons on our hair, we were able to generate enough static electricity to be able to pick up a couple of pieces of the tissue paper. Cool! But Bee wanted more of the tissue paper to stick, and asked if she could glue them on.
Sure, why not! So we added paste, and a few feathers into the mix too.
This was quite tricky for Bee, as she had to hold the balloon with one hand to steady it, whilst adding the glue and the tissue paper / feathers with the other. It requires a bit of coordination to be able to use both hands in different ways simultaneously like this!
She was very pleased with how they turned out.

Your balloons look very festive – a bit like lanterns.

Nice idea to keep children busy. It can help children to be more creative and it is fun to do all these things.
