Upcycled Kindle Cover

I love reading.

I always have. I used to devour books as a kid.

And I continue to, as an adult, whenever I find time. Since JJ was born, every time she fell asleep in the car, I've sat there reading until she wakes - sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes an hour. I churned through dozens of books in her first year. Now it's slowed down somewhat, but I still manage to find snatches of reading time, here and there.

Sometimes I read non-fiction. How-to books, or biographies. Sometimes classics - I love my classics. Sometimes YA (young adult), books that I usually find hard to put back down. Sometimes fantasy - I have a soft spot for dragons.

Mr Banya bought me a Kindle a year or so ago. Birthday? Christmas? One of those. I only read on the Kindle now. It's so much lighter in my handbag than a book.

But it needed protecting. So of course, I made a cover for it. As you do when you're a wannabe sewer.

What do you think?

My opinion?  I didn't love it at first. The fabrics I chose are too stretchy, and the padding not stiff enough. The button hole is larger than it needs to be. The four elastic pieces on the inside, which were supposed to hold the Kindle in place while I was reading, don't really work very well. And the whole thing is slightly too big, and so I had to sew around the edges another quarter inch.

But all these things I put down to loveable handmade flaws.

It does a great job of protecting my Kindle in my handbag. And I love the colour combination. It has grown on me....

It's almost entirely upcycled. The blue patterned fabric was from Reverse Garbage. The light brown fabric was one of my old tops that had lost its shape. The button was from a knitted dress that had started to unravel. And the padding was left over from my fabric letters. The only thing that is brand new is the cotton thread.

Here are some more shots...

And here it is as part of the contents of my nappybag handbag.

To make it, I copied this tutorial from Seven Sisters. Isn't theirs cute? As you can see, theirs is a lot stiffer. And I must sew with a smaller seam allowance, hence why mine turned out slightly too large.

Let me know if you make one!
